A flat stomach is an important component of a physically fit appearance .However a healthy diet and workouts can sometimes do little to eliminate accumulation of excess fat and loose sagging skin in the abdominal area. This is particularly true after weight loss and / or pregnancy. Abdominoplasty is a procedure which is designed to flatten the abdomen by removal of excess skin often in combination with tightening of the abdominal muscles. The abdominal muscles often loosen and re-position after a pregnancy. In some patients it is necessary to re-position and tighten the abdominal wall muscles to optimize the final result. The surgery is done either under iv sedation or general anesthesia depending on what will be done and patient preference. The surgery is done as an outpatient. Patients are typically back to work in 1 to 3 weeks.More strenuous activity is delayed until 4 to 6 weeks.
Generally a horizontal incision is made within or above the pubic region. The length of the incision varies by patient depending on the specifics of the case and the variant of the Abdominoplasty performed. In patients with large amounts of loose skin a second incision around the naval may be performed. Excess skin above the naval is separated from the deeper tissues, pulled downward and surgically removed.
